Insurance and Medical

Please note the Club does NOT provide insurance for any players or members. You are strongly encouraged to ensure you have your own insurance cover.

SENIOR PLAYERS
The HKRU provide both a Death & Permanent Disablement and also Public Liability cover for senior rugby players and officials who are properly registered with the Union and participating in rugby matches or rugby training organised by the Union or Clubs and Teams affiliated to the Union.
The Union DOES NOT provide personal accident cover for senior players - in other words if you suffer an injury whilst playing rugby and seek medical treatment you do NOT have any cover under a Union policy. Players should consider the option of obtaining their own insurance, if they are unwilling to use the public health system or if they are not currently a Hong Kong resident.

UNDER AGE PLAYERS PARTICIPATING IN THE ADULT GAME
World Rugby does not encourage underage players to participate in the adult game.
A 17 year old player who wishes to participate in adult rugby has NO coverage under the HKRU Youth insurance policy (described below), and comes under the Adult death and serious permanent disability policy (described above).
The HKRU will only support an exceptional player to participate in the adult game.
In the event that a underage player wishes to participate in the adult game of rugby union the underage player form must be completed in full by the Player, Coach, Parent/ Legal Guardian, Club Chairman/Club's Director of Rugby. Furthermore under no circumstances should the player play in the front row.

YOUTH PLAYERS
The HKRU provides a limited amount of Personal Accident cover for mini, colts, girls youth and schools rugby players (ages 4 to 19) who are properly registered with the Union and participating in age grade rugby matches or rugby training organised by the Union or Clubs and Teams affiliated to the Union. There is also Public Liability cover for coaches, referees and supervisors.

Please note the following limits for the HKRU youth policy:

  • HKRU Insurance Scheme covers up to HK$50,000, however, the excess is HK$10,000; i.e. anyone injured who requires hospital care and makes use of the HKRU scheme must pay the first $10,000 themselves.
  • In order to qualify to use the HKRU Insurance Scheme players should use government hospitals only, unless prior permission to use a private hospital has been granted by the HKRU. If prior permission is not granted, then unfortunately HKRU cannot assist with coverage.
  • The insurance scheme does not include for physio and aftercare costs.
  • HKRU strongly encourages every player to take out their own personal medical insurance.

PLEASE NOTE THIS YOUTH POLICY DOES NOT PROVIDE COVERAGE FOR ANYONE PLAYING IN TERTIARY OR SENIOR RUGBY, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE PLAYER IS AGED 18 OR UNDER.
